TMView: Trademark Search across the European Union and Beyond

TMView

TMView is the largest free trademark database in the world. It was launched ten years ago with trademark data from very few European Intellectual property offices. Today it includes over 107 million trademarks from 68 participating offices worldwide. This trademark search tool provides data from all the participating offices that too free of cost. The information can be accessed in all the languages used in the different participating offices.

The key participating offices are WIPO, USPTO, Mexico, Italy, Japan, India, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and many more. Among the many uses of TMView, the key uses are trademark search, checking the availability of the trademark name, discovering competitor’s trademarks and responding to trademark examiners.

TM View Features

EUIPO, in line with its constant efforts to improve TMView, launched the beta version, which, as claimed, is quicker, easier, and better. There are significant improvements in its features, which include:

1. The TMView, in its beta version, has a “Contains” mode for conducting the trademark search.
2. Basic search can be customized by choosing the fields to appear on the front page. This further reduces the need to conduct an advanced search.
3. TMView now shows a better definition of Nice and Vienna Accurate searching of the figurative elements and goods and services is made available.
4. It keeps a record of past searches on the front page, and the users can easily repeat their older searches with one click.
5. The beta version also places available filters alongside the search results.
6. The trademark search results are automatically ordered, and the trademarks with close similarity appear on top.
7. The search results page in the beta version shows more information about the listed trademarks just by expanding the row.
8. Another important change reflected in the beta version is an additional view on the results page, which features four tabs with statistical input. The information contains a chart of trademark statuses, trademark types, territories, and the classes of the listed applications.
9. In the recent beta version, Trademark images can also be utilized for conducting an instant search.
10. Upto nine trademarks can be selected on the results page for visual comparison.
11. TMView beta has even incorporated enhanced export functionality in word format.

Since 2016, EUIPO has been continuously improving and enhancing the user-friendliness of TMView. This seems to be an effort in the same direction. The users can also provide feedback by clicking on the button at the bottom of each page.
