Everything You Need to Know About Patent Renewal
Timelines, consequences, and strategies for managing your patent's 20-year lifecycle.
When Are Renewal Fees Payable?
Renewal fees:
- ✓Start from the 3rd year counted from the filing date
- ✓Must be paid before the expiry of the preceding year
- ✓Can be paid annually or in advance for multiple years
Renewal timelines are calculated from the filing date, not the grant date.
For a complete explanation of timelines and the 3rd year rule, refer to:
What Happens If Renewal Fees Are Not Paid?
If renewal fees are not paid by the due date:
- A 6 month extension period is available upon payment of the prescribed extension fee
- If payment is not completed within that period, the patent ceases to have effect
Restoration may be available within 18 months from the cessation date, subject to statutory conditions.
Renewal Fees vs Filing Fees
This page calculates only post-grant renewal and maintenance fees.
